CNN —Coco Gauff advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Finals with a hard-fought victory over Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová on Friday, despite conceding 17 double faults during the match. “I felt like I needed to hit through the court,” Gauff said afterwards, according to Sky Sports. CNN —Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou came away from his first meeting with a 10-year-old Coco Gauff convinced that she was destined for greatness. Gauff and Mouratoglou have known each other for almost 10 years and worked together in an unofficial capacity ahead of this year's French Open. Gauff can now call herself a grand slam Champion. “She has learned to deal with [the pressure] at a young age, and that explains partly her ability to win her first grand slam final at only 19 years old,” said Mouratoglou. “I think the Williams sisters have inspired a lot of African Americans and Black people in general,” he said.

Last Saturday’s final between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka exemplified some of the very best and very worst of the tournament. Their contrast of styles was on display for all to see: Sabalenka’s power and single-mindedness against Gauff’s ability to endure and problem-solve. Gauff’s win, however, was immediately understood as symbolizing American core values such as determination, grit and self-belief. This reflexive American triumphalism turns any final into little more than a prologue, with more and better promised in the future. It just sells the product; a grasping for greatness in the moment instead of simply letting the moment be.

CNN —Coco Gauff has been crowned America’s new tennis darling after her amazing US Open championship win against Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. Like Serena, Gauff is unafraid to speak out on social issues or speak up after a bad call from the umpire. “[Venus and Serena] are the reason why I have this trophy today, to be honest,” Gauff told media after her US Open win. Growing up there weren’t too many black tennis players dominating the sport. Despite the many obstacles, Black tennis thrived back in the early 1900s.

The women’s final, which will have Gauff face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, caps off a record-breaking US Open where not only attendance surpassed previous years, but so did demand and even ticket prices. The average ticket price this year is $365, which is slightly higher than last year’s ticket price of $350. The US Open ends Sunday with the men’s final, which StubHub said is the best-selling match for the whole two-week tournament. It’s not just ticket prices that are through the roof — so are sales of the beloved signature cocktail of the tournament.

Among the things that helped the most with that process, Gauff said, was putting her life “into perspective” when she started to feel overwhelmed. “That’s real pressure, that’s real hardship, that’s real life. Gauff has expertly handled the pressure during her US Open run. “So that’s the reason why, I think it’s just putting my life in perspective and realizing how grateful and blessed I am.”

player Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat is one of the many boldface names who have come out for her matches. They were in the house on Friday for Gauff’s third-round win over Elise Mertens. Butler was there, too, and returned for her fourth-round win over Caroline Wozniacki on Sunday. He started putting her on the court in matches against players who were more advanced in their development than she was. More often than not, she found a way to win.

Brad Gilbert — tennis junkie, junkballer, commentator, coach of legends — had roughly seven minutes to trade his coaching hat for a microphone, to shift from helping Coco Gauff manage her third-round match Friday night to interviewing Novak Djokovic in the tunnel before his. That match, by the way, ended just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, and Gilbert had spent Friday afternoon calling matches before heading to Gauff’s courtside box. It was well after 2 a.m. when he got back to the New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott. Then he spent an hour analyzing the video of the match that Gauff’s next opponent, Caroline Wozniacki, had won that afternoon. Andre Agassi had him at his side when he won the U.S. Open in 1994, as did Andy Roddick, in 2003.

In the opening set of her third-round match against Elise Mertens on Friday, Coco Gauff looked fallible, frustrated and like she would be finished early, nothing like she had earlier this week at the U.S. Open. Mertens, a 27-year-old Belgian, was playing loosely and aggressively, while Gauff, the 19-year-old American superstar, made error after error on just about every stroke. It was suddenly easy to imagine Gauff’s run at the U.S. Open coming to an end on this cool New York evening. Instead, Gauff turned it on and turned the emotional tables on Mertens. Gauff won the third set cleanly, 6-0.

She took some medicine, and even though she was able to remain upright and win, it was an obvious struggle. “I know it is tough to play a player who is injured or not feeling well on the court,” Jabeur said. The pro-Gauff crowd turned on Siegemund, who later said she had been grossly mistreated. By contrast, it was all love and respect on Tuesday in Armstrong Stadium, where both Jabeur and Osorio played without any tension. When it was over, the fans sang “Happy Birthday” to Jabeur, who turned 29 on Monday.

CNN —It wasn’t too long ago that Coco Gauff exploded onto the scene as a 15-year-old, defeating Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019. Andreeva won the first set against Gauff. Christophe Ena/APDespite her age, Gauff has already played in numerous French Open tournaments and reached the final last year. When Coco Gauff arrived in Paris in May for the French Open, she did not expect the tournament to be a milestone in her tennis career. Chris Evert predicted she would win a Grand Slam championship, even at 18; John McEnroe declared that she would be No. She loved Paris. In the semifinals, she unleashed the power of her serve — one of the fastest in women’s tennis — to close out the match. In the end, Gauff lost 6-1, 6-3 to Iga Swiatek, a Polish athlete, currently ranked No.
